About the Event

Job Summary


The Clymont Community League is seeking reliable and hardworking General Labourers - Groundskeeper for full time work May through August 31st for the upkeep of our grounds, facilities, and ball diamonds. Clymont Community League is a non-profit, volunteer lead community hall in Parkland County near the University of Alberta Botanical Gardens on a 30-acre property.


The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the overall appearance of the buildings and grounds are in excellent condition for community use and events. They will perform a variety of duties such as garden and flower bed maintenance, tree pruning and nature trail upkeep, painting, lawn mowing, weed whacking, garbage and recycling removal, and outhouse and washroom cleaning. They will also be responsible for maintenance on the three ball diamonds, including dragging and leveling the shale surface, mowing, weeding, chalking lines, set up and removal of bases. Additionally they will aid with indoor and outdoor event preparation and set up, execution, and advertising. The position is seasonal and will require the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings as needed when, for example, when there is a ball tournament scheduled.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Grounds Maintenance: To maintain the cleanliness and appearance of the community league grounds and facilities, including tractor mowing, edging, weeding, painting, removing debris, and trimming grass, plants, and hedges.

  2. Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment, such as ride-on lawn mowers, small tractors, ball diamond in-field groomers, trimmers, blowers, and hand tools, ensuring they are well maintained and in good working condition. 

  3. Cleaning and Waste Management: Collect and dispose of litter and debris found throughout the grounds, and emptying garbage and recycling containers, ensuring a clean and safe environment for community members. Regular cleaning of washrooms and restocking items and other cleaning as required.

  4. Garden Care: Assist in the planting, watering, fertilizing, and pruning of flowers, shrubs, and trees to ensure they remain healthy and aesthetically pleasing.

  5. Event Support: Assist with preparations, set-up, and tear-down for events, and maintaining clean and organized event spaces.

  6. Reporting: Report any maintenance issues, vandalism, theft, safety hazards, or concerns to the supervisor in a timely manner.

  7. Collaboration: Work closely with other team members, including coworkers, volunteers and supervisor, to coordinate tasks and ensure efficient grounds upkeep and facility maintenance. Communicate with other staff members and volunteers to ensure that all tasks are completed on time. Attend meetings with coworkers and supervisor, check-in with supervisor on work needing to be completed, and plan work daily and weekly. You should be comfortable working with volunteers and staff, as well as managing solo tasks such as lawn care. The Maintenance Supervisor will provide the training and guidance you need to succeed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • This position is partially funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program, and as such candidates are required to be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period, a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment and have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

  • Ability to operate and trouble shoot and do basic maintenance on lawn, garden, and ball diamond grounds care equipment (e.g., ride-on mowers, in-field groomers, small tractors, and trimmers).

  • Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds and work outdoors in various weather conditions, and bending over, standing, or walking for extended periods.

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

  • Attention to detail to identify and address maintenance needs, such as weeds, dead heading flowers, and picking up litter to ensure the grounds remain pristine for Clymont’s guests and events.

  • Ability to follow instructions

  • Effective verbal communication skills to interact professionally with team members, volunteers, and community members.

  • Self-Motivation: Ability to work independently and take initiative in completing assigned tasks and identifying additional maintenance needs proactively.

Assets

  • Previous experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or related roles.

As this role is partially funded by the Canada Summer Jobs Program, to be eligible, your age at the beginning of the employment period must be between 15 and 30 years.


Work Environment

  • Outdoor work environment with exposure to weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and snow

  • Required to wear appropriate protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, and earplugs

  • Typical working days and hours are weekdays, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. May be required to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

  • May be required to work in noisy and dusty conditions


The hourly wage will be $16-18 per hour, commensurate with experience.
